Well, last night Richard retired. Officially. We had our final seminar wherein we discussed the last chapters of his newest book, and at 5:30pm we all applauded Richard. It was a Surreal Moment, or also describable as a Historic Moment - I was There when the clock struck 5:30, when Richard's final seminar ended, his final teaching moments drew to a close. Afterwards there was a wine reception in which Jim Davila (see PaleoJudaica) read a tribute to Richard, Richard read a little speech, and we all applauded him again, and then he was off. He leaves Saturday for the States for 3 weeks, then shortly thereafter will be moving to Cambridge. I start here with a picture of Richard in a very characteristic thinking/listening pose, but yes, I was a wee bit taller than my supervisor... He will be missed around here.
